Every object has a story

The Thames has been collecting them for centuries

What is Mudlarking?

Mudlarking is the search for objects and fragments of history along the foreshore of the River Thames.

For centuries, people have lived and worked alongside the river, and countless things have been lost, discarded or washed into it. The Thames has preserved many of those objects in its mud — from coins and pottery to clay pipes, buttons, tools and everyday items that once belonged to ordinary Londoners.

For me, mudlarking is about much more than finding old objects. Each discovery is a small connection with the past. The real fascination comes from finding out what an object is, when it was made, who might have used it and what it can tell us about life along the Thames.

This site is where I’ll record those discoveries and share the stories behind them. I hope it will also help others discover the fascinating history of the Thames, learn about the objects that can still be found along its foreshore, and perhaps inspire a greater interest in London’s past. I’ll be exploring the history, archaeology and people of the river — and sharing what I learn, one find at a time.
