Before the Thames

Finds from the Fields

Before I began looking towards the Thames foreshore, my interest in the past had already taken me across fields and farmland with a metal detector.

Over the years, those searches have produced a remarkable variety of objects — from coins and small everyday items to finds with much older stories to tell.

This is a selection of those discoveries, including objects that have been recorded with the Portable Antiquities Scheme. Together, they show just how much history can still survive beneath our feet, waiting to be found, identified and understood.
