My First “Decent” Find

I had been detecting for a few months when I found this beauty – my first truly interesting find. It’s a medieval lead seal matrix dating back to the 13th century.

It reads “S Ionis Toterbold” which translates as the “seal of John Toterbold”.

It’s amazing, isn’t it, to think of Mr Toterbold using this little piece of lead to seal his important documents some 800 years ago!

It’s recorded on the British Museum’s Portable Antiquities Scheme here.
