My Oldest Coin

This tiny bronze “unit” was minted by the Celtic Ambiani tribe in Gaul – modern day France. Quite how it got from their base in what is now Amiens to a farmer’s field in Royston is anybody’s guess but it’s fun to keep guessing anyway!

The coin dates from between 60 – 25 BC and is recorded on the British Museum’s Portable Antiquities Scheme here.
